We're very proud to announce that the CD we've recorded, Hymns From The Gathering Church, will be released online, in stores, and with a show at the ArtsCenter in Carrboro on January 27th. You can stream the whole album here, and starting Friday you can purchase the album at the same link. Below is more information on the project -
Hymns From The Gathering Church is a collection of traditional but rearranged hymns from the Chapel Hill/Durham church plant The Gathering Church. This album of hymns and spirituals marks the second release from the Gathering Church following 2010’s Christmas Nights, being released locally on January 27th with a release show at the Carrboro ArtsCenter.
Hymns From The Gathering Church furthers the approach taken onChristmas Nights, and expands it to a full-length album. A bevy of local guest vocalists and musicians, including Phil Cook (Megafaun), Heather McEntire (Mount Moriah), Seth Kauffman (Floating Action), Mandolin Orange, Skylar Gudasz, and Ryan Gustafson, take turns singing and interpreting traditional hymns and spirituals. They join the returning production team of Jeff Crawford, Brett Harris, Nick Jaeger (The Tomahawks), Mark Simonsen (The Old Ceremony), and James Wallace, as well as musicians in the Gathering Church congregation who volunteered their time and musical talent to the project. With the help of a successful Kickstarter campaign, the album was recorded over the last half of 2011 at Arbor Ridge Studios in Chapel Hill, NC.
The intent of the process of arranging and recording was to collaborate with other artists, inviting each to help interpret these songs that date back to, and in some cases beyond, the 18th and 19th centuries. The result is a varied yet consistent product, with each artist putting a unique stamp on their particular song.
The Gathering Church began meeting in 2009, and meets at Creekside Elementary School (Durham) every Sunday. The Gathering Church is a group of people who has been gathered (and is being gathered) together by God. Our primary aims are to be present to God in our worship, connected to each other in our relationships, and engaged in loving and serving the world.
Crawford serves as Music Director of the church, with other members of the production crew regularly contributing to the music. In addition to the recorded albums, Music from the Gathering Church also participates in quarterly musical events around Chapel Hill and Durham, including a Good Friday service and an annual Christmas “Hymn Sing."
This project encapsulates a vision of the music ministry and church at large: to promote more of a conversation than a clash between sacred and secular. Each song is an attempt to put some of the timelessness idiomatic of this music from the past into a form that makes sense for our community in the present. Listening to this record, one might realize that these traditioned tunes can be places of innovation and discovery, or that perhaps even the very ground one is standing on could possibly be "holy ground."
